Before we wrap up our first sailing season, we’re treating ourselves to a week at Santa Rosalia Marina. For this we must dock Milagros in a marina slip for the first time, which puts our nerves to the test. We’re enjoying the marina time before sailing through the night to reach our summer break destination. And we find the cause of a noise that has been bothering us for a very long time.

Before our big jump to the other side of the Sea of Cortez, we wanted to relax in the small marina of Santa Rosalia. Since we had already heard from several other boats that they also wanted to go there, we reserved a berth early on. It’s not usually necessary, but this year there were an unusual number of boats sailing the Sea of Cortez. We do not know exactly why. It’s probably a combination of Corona traffic jam, i.e. sailors who couldn’t come to their boat during Corona, and newcomers who decided to finally live their dream after Corona. The boat market was and is hot – prices are high and good boats are quickly off the market.

Change of plans at the last minute

We left the anchorage in front of Isla San Marcos just before sunrise and reached the port entrance of Santa Rosalia 2 hours later. We were in contact with Katie from SV Alegría via WhatsApp during the short crossing and informed her that we wanted to dock on the port side (with the left side of the boat) at the end tie. I was at the helm and David was preparing the boat for docking. Mooring lines and fenders were ready. As soon as we passed the harbour entrance at a snail’s pace, we got the message from Katie that the marina had other plans for us. They wanted us to dock further in. On the starboard side. Which is not the one we had prepared.

The marina in Santa Rosalia

Mooring in the marina?

For a short time, things got a bit hectic aboard Milagros. We didn’t have much time because the marina was just to the left after entering the harbour. So, David had to quickly change all the lines and fenders to the other side. And I had to adjust my manoeuvre at short notice. We chose the end tie in the first place because it was the easiest to dock at. We had never moored alone in a marina with Milagros. After all, we didn’t want to damage our boat, the dock, or anything or anyone else.

Stress is useless

But the conditions that day were ideal – there were no wind or waves. So, I slowly maneuvered Milagros into the marina. Slowly, that she was just about manoeuvrable. “Slow is pro” – I took that literally. But that wouldn’t have worked with more wind, because the boat offers a fairly large surface for the wind to attack, push, and tear, and that could have pushed us onto other boats. Then, driving in swiftly would have been the better option. But there was no wind. Katie and two marina employees were waiting at the dock and helped us with the dock lines.

The marina is full

Once again, we were able to successfully tick something off our list of ‘first timers’. The only damage done was to David’s forehead. When changing lines, he hit his head on a solar panel. As a comforter, we toasted the successful manoeuvre with a beer. And Thomas welcomed us in the Swiss alley – we had docked right next to Robusta. A short time later, Susimi and Mar de Luz also docked in the marina which now was definitely full. Finally, we were back in Santa Rosalia. Iñaki, David and Carmen had previously stopped here when they brought Milagros to Puerto Peñasco.

We were more successful than this shrimping boat!

Finally air conditioning again

We enjoyed life in the marina. Tacos, ice cream, shopping – all within walking distance. A few days later, Marga, her father and her sister joined us with Dogfish, and anchored in Santa Rosalia harbour. It was crazy hot in the marina, there was hardly a breeze making it to our boat. Katie would invite us onto air-conditioned Alegría, so we could escape the heat. Unfortunately, we had left our AC in Puerto Peñasco. But we found out that Marga had an AC unit for sale. Deal!

Historic Santa Rosalia

Despite the heat, we explored the cultural side of Santa Rosalia. The city owes its existence and foundation to the rich copper deposits discovered in the region in 1868, which were mined there until the mid-1980s. Then the permanently loss-making operation was stopped. A Korean company has been mining copper ore again with hydrometallurgical plants since 2015. There is a museum and many slowly decaying buildings that characterize the cityscape, dating back to the days when the mining operations were still active. We visited the museum and were guided through an old power station. With combined Spanish forces, we managed to ask the guide about the old days. He patiently answered all our questions. With the cultural came the culinary amenities of being in a marina.

Fish for everyone

David had expressed an interest in a fresh yellowtail through a contact at the local fishing shop. We had gotten used to not necessarily seeing promises as given, but rather as an opportunity. We were all the happier when David received the call that a 10 kg fish would be brought to us. Actually, we didn’t know what to do with so much fish, but for 50 pesos (2.50$) per kilo you can’t say no. We fileted the beast on the dock, invited our friends over and started with sashimi (raw and unseasoned 3-4 mm fillets). We’ve also made sushi, pasta with marinara sauce, and soup. And we gave half of it away. Everything was super tasty, but after 3 days we had definitely had enough.

We’re going on a night sail

After 8 days in Santa Rosalia, we had a suitable weather window to cross the Sea of Cortez to San Carlos where we intended to haul out our boat for the summer break. We calculated about 15 hours for the 75 nautical miles (approx. 140 km). Since we wanted to arrive in daylight, we left the marina in the late afternoon. We weren’t really looking forward to the night crossing. When it’s dark, everything is more threatening – the wind, the sounds. And since someone should always be awake, we decided on 4-hour night shifts. We don’t like sailing at night.

Dark clouds on the horizon

The journey actually started out well. We were accompanied out to sea by dolphins on the bow. But the predicted wind did not come and only after dark we could sail. Because we wanted to be careful, we had reduced the sail area to reef 2 before sunset. Suddenly, dark clouds began to form in the distance and lightning began to flash. The wind also increased steadily. Of course, the thunderstorm was sitting exactly where we wanted to go. And we didn’t want to go where the storm was. So, we changed our course to the north and checked for anchorage alternatives.

Hello San Carlos

We didn’t want to anchor much further up the coast if it wasn’t really necessary. Strong southerly winds were forecast for the coming week, and we had made an appointment for the haul out with the marina in San Carlos. We had built in enough buffer days to be able to catch our flights to Switzerland even in the event of complications. But going down the coast against southerly winds is no fun either. Luckily, the thunderstorms gradually abated, and we were able to set course for our actual destination, Bahía Algodones.

It’s rolly

Shortly after 8 am we anchored in the northern part of the bay. Originally, we had planned to anchor in the southern part in front of a rockface to be protected from the southerly wind forecasted. But we went past the rocky cliff, didn’t find it very pretty and crossed the bay to the other side. There were a few other boats anchored there too, so we figured that would fit. It did, too, until after sunset. Then the rocking started. Waves from the south were swept around the corner straight into the bay where we were anchored. The boat rocked from left to right, more and more. In the galley, dishes rattled and anything that wasn’t perfectly secured was thrown around in the cabin. We cursed ourselves for not just anchoring in front of the rocks.

Let’s get out of here quickly

So, the next morning we got the boat ready again. As soon as we saw the first rays of sunshine on the horizon, we started the engine and crossed the bay again. Another boat also escaped, but unlike us, they left the bay. We wanted to check the situation in front of the rockface. Lo and behold, less than 30 minutes later we were anchored in calm seas. And we cursed some more because we could have had calmness all night.

Out of the frying pan and into the fire

But we got something else in return: Our anchorage was next to the entrance to Marina Real of San Carlos. As soon as breakfast was over, the first jet skis showed up. Then the motorboats came together with the water skiers and the loud music. All day long they passed in front of and behind us, making Milagros rock with the wakes they produced.

There is a noise

And then there was that one noise. Since the launch, it has bothered me. As I lay in bed, I heard a “pock-pock” right next to my head when the boat rolled to starboard, but only then. When she tilted back the other way, you couldn’t hear anything. I had searched every single cupboard in the cabins, head and cockpit looking for the source. I had also checked the engine room and under our bed as we suspected occasional play in the rudder stock. For example, I sat on the floor in front of our bed in the dark (the noise only bothers you when you want to sleep), shined a flashlight on the steering gear and tried to find the physical movement to the noise. Unfortunately, unsuccessful.

What can it be?

What annoyed me the most was that the noise was asymmetrical, so it wasn’t something that rolled back and forth. And it was pretty loud, so it had to be something heavy. I had imagined every possible object and mentally went through our inventory to find something that fit that description. But I just couldn’t find anything.

What a relief

Checking the lockers in the cockpit again, I caught a faint movement out of the corner of my eye. I took a closer look, and the movement matched the rhythm of the sound. I couldn’t hear anything, but I asked David to listen downstairs while I held the object to test. And I almost started crying when David confirmed that the noise downstairs was gone. What a relief! What was it? The pulley of our genoa (headsail). A small movement that was barely visible to the naked eye. And the boat acted as a sound box, amplifying the sounds below decks. I had searched for it for hours, but I would never have found it. Unfortunately, the discovery came a little late – just before the haul out. But it will save us a lot of nerves in the future.

Coyote Bay, where we had been anchored with Marga for a while, was crazy. The heat in the place gave us a glimpse of what summer in the Sea of Cortez had to offer temperature wise. Namely sweltering heat. We sweated our a**es off! Every night at sunset, we would meet up with Marga on Dogfish for a cold drink and we’d reflect on the days passed. Wasn’t it hotter today than yesterday? How many liters of fluid did we loose? Will we ever leave Coyote Bay again?

Hot hotter hottest

Physical exertion was out of the question, especially during midday. The sun literally blasted from the sky, and we had over 40°C in the boat. I usually lay on the sofa under a fan while Pati was reading on her eBook reader out in the cockpit and so we sweated away. If there were any small tasks on Milagros, we couldn’t and didn’t want to do them until after sundown. Not that it would have gotten cooler then, but at least the sun was gone. Given the circumstances, we were satisfied with very little.

High visit

Apart from the rigging, we didn’t do much worth mentioning either. In fact, we simply enjoyed being anchored next to Marga and Dogfish in the beautiful Coyote bay without having to worry too much about the onward journey. A little swimming here, a little snorkeling there, all garnished with fine food and the obligatory sundowners. One evening Marga’s dad François also came to visit Dogfish and so our group of three became one of four. Marga’s dad would travel to Santa Rosalia with her and Dogfish on her way back north.

Making plans

But, as it always is, time passed and slowly but surely, we had to think about moving on again. So, we sat down to plan the next jumps towards Santa Rosalia. First stop was a return visit of Santo Domingo at the entrance to Bahia Conception. From there we were able to move further north and to Santa Rosalia if a weather window was favourable (with a southerly wind). Marga and her father decided to stay in Coyote a little longer. So, Milagros set off alone to a short and unexciting hop back to Santo Domingo.

New goals

As soon as the southerly winds picked up, we set off on a longer sail in the direction of «Isla San Marcos». From there it was only a stone’s throw to Santa Rosalia, the city that we actually wanted to head to on our absolutely insane ordeal of a maiden voyage. We lifted our anchor at the same time as another boat and set sail for the first time directly from the hook without engine support. We first watched our neighbours sail away and then just imitated the process. Worked out great and was fun! Yet another newly learned skill.

A race that isn’t a race at all

The conditions for sailing that day were really great. The wind was good enough that we were going over 5 knots at times, but not strong enough that we peed our pants from fear. We tried to keep up with our neighbours. The longer the journey lasted, the clearer it became that they were traveling in the same direction as us. We constantly compared our tactics to those of the other boat. They tended to stay closer to shore while we tried our luck further out.

No wind and big waves

As the day progressed, it became clear that our competitors had probably chosen the better of the two tactics. While the wind dropped steadily further offshore where we were, closer to shore the wind seemed to be more constant and we were gradually being left behind. At the same time, a rather impressive sea was building up. Big waves in rather long distance gradually came from the south. Which was actually unusual in the Sea of Cortez, which is known for the fact that unpleasant waves can build up in a relatively short time, which can make life difficult and uncomfortable with short wave spacing.

Cape Verdean style waves

The strange southerly swell gradually increased. At some point we felt reminded of our very first sailing trip in 2018 on Cape Verde, where the sea was simply powerful and impressive. At the same time the wind dropped. We initially refused to use the engine to help, but eventually the sails just made too much noise. The more waves there are, the more wind is needed to keep the sails taut. The boat can tilt all over the place and if the pressure in the sails is not sufficient, they start flapping back and forth. This is firstly annoying and secondly it can put unnecessary strain on all the material. So, at some point we decided to stop the whole exercise. Down with the sails! Burrito-time.

New acquaintances on the water

The other boat was stuck in front of us on the east side of the island and stood practically still as it rocked in the waves and sails flapped left and right again. So, we quickly caught up with our fellow travelers. During our overtaking manoeuvre, the owner of the “Mar de Luz” radioed and we learned that he was the only one on board and had the same plan as us. Stop at Isla San Marcos and then continue to Santa Rosalia. Luckily, we had a reservation for the Santa Rosalia Marina as the general trend at this time of year with virtually all boats is to head north to avoid the summer hurricanes.

Hello Susimi

Before spending some marina time, we spent some Sweet Pea Cove time on Isla San Marcos. As we rounded the north side of the island, we found SV Susimi huddled into a corner. Our attempt to do the same failed due to poor visibility in the water. We knew of nasty rocks underwater that we couldn’t see now, so we stopped trying and found shelter just around the corner from Paul and Hazel.

On a discovery tour

So, after a good night’s sleep we went to visit the two on Susimi. They knew that were exciting things to see nearby. On Isla San Marcos, too, the water masses had carved sensational rock formations and caves into the stone. Paul and Hazel paddled along on their paddleboards while we were being lazyasses and chose our dinghy over the kayak. One of the caves could be entered under a rock arch and we were amazed when we met a group of Mexicans on the other side who had apparently camped there. There are definitely worse places to stay! At first, we laughed at Paul’s comment about smelling smoke (“Paul smells cavemen!”), but his nose was right after all!

Coffee and fish

After our little tour of discovery, we found ourselves at Susimi’s for a round of coffee. Back on Milagros it was time for yet another bonfire on the beach. Therefore, a fish was needed! So, we saddled up the dinghy, grabbed my spearfishing gear and rounded the corner to a promising rock formation. I shot a fish as soon as I got in the water. I didn’t have time for a second one, because while I was still in the water, something weird happened.

Cloudy soup

Suddenly a wall of murky water moved towards me. Within minutes, visibility dropped from about 20 meters to zero. The cloudy soup came from the north and from one moment to the next spearfishing was out of the question. When I was back with Pati in the dinghy, we had to take a closer look at the situation. And it was really weird: the brown water didn’t seem to mix with the “normal” water and an edge formed between blue and brown. However, the brown water never found its way into the anchor bay. It seemed to stop at Isla San Marcos. Currents? Sewage from Santa Rosalia? If any of you know what this phenomenon is, please enlighten us!

We ended up in such a beautiful place

After a short walk ashore, we collected driftwood for a fire, made potato wedges and the fish and enjoyed the evening atmosphere. It was the last night at anchor before heading to the marina in Santa Rosalia. Our very first season on and with Milagros was slowly but surely coming to an end. Later, as the sun went down, the Sea of Cortez revealed all its glory. Just Pati, a bonfire and me. A full stomach and a full heart. And around us all the colours that a sunset here in Mexico can give off. What more could I possibly want from life?

Our refit of Milagros is to start in spring 2021. But first our boat had to be brought to its place on the dry dock in Puerto Peñasco. Once there, we would have more than 1500 nautical miles behind us and a big project called Milagros ahead of us. After we had weathered a few days in Santa Rosalia because of the strong northerlies, we started on the last leg of our long journey.

We were really lucky with the choice of our stops on the way towards Puerto Peñasco. We enjoyed a full load of pelicans in Bahia Santa Maria, battled a full load of engine problems in Mag Bay, and La Paz was great, too. Our current home Santa Rosalia was too. Who knows how we would have decided if we had had the time and choice. Maybe we would have headed north anyway. Maybe we would have used the north wind for a trip south. Or maybe we would have just stayed a few more days.

Bye bye Santa Rosalia

Right now, it was time to travel north on to Puerto Peñasco. A few hours after the wind subsided, we packed our belongings. We untied the lines from Fonatur Marina Santa Rosalia in the early morning hours and left the small port. We would sense and smell the sea air for another 250 nautical miles, listen to another 50 hours of engine noise, enjoy another night shift.

After we had left Santa Rosalia, the reception of our cell phones lasted for a relatively long time. We took the chance for video Whatsapp video calls to Pati and our friends in Switzerland. It was good to see all the familiar faces.

We also received some great shots of our departure from Sarah on SV Perspective. It is worthwhile to take a look at their websites, too! They have been sailing the Gulf of California for a long time.

Biology lesson

The whole water was full of transparent creatures of all kinds. I did a little research out of curiosity. Comb Jellies certainly belonged to the abundance of life, as they are capable of bioluminescence. Many Salps also let themselves be carried by the current. Big, small, long, short, thin, thick, transparent or orange. They appeared to us in all colors and shapes. I don’t know whether they are capable of producing light reflections. If someone has a clue or knows better, please tell us in the comments. We moved forward through a mirror-like aquarium towards Puerto Peñasco.

Encounters of the dark kind

It was already pitch black when we passed the Midriff Islands halfway to Puerto Peñasco. These are made up of over 50 islands and are more or less in the middle of Baja California. They were formed when the Bahia California peninsula separated from mainland Mexico millions of years ago. Between the islands, during my watch in the middle of the night, I met a brightly lit fishing trawler, which was making its tracks through the darkness. A small sailboat also came towards us. It wasn’t lighted properly, so I had to observe its course closely. These encounters at night always have something mystic to them. You notice that you’re never alone, altough one can feel like it sometimes when underway on the oceans.

Arrival in Puerto Peñasco

When Iñaki took over for his watch at 01:00 in the morning, I was happy. I was ready for bedtime. Practically the entire time on the boat, I only relied on my internal clock. It was my inner Swiss watch that told me the next day when it was time to get up, not the alarm clock. Still, I got out of bed practically every morning between 08:00 and 09:00. So too, on the day of arrival. As soon as I got up, it was time to prepare Milagros for our arrival in Puerto Peñasco.

The entrance to the port

The entrance to the port of Puerto Peñasco is narrow. We received instructions via Whatsapp from Salvador, the owner of the Cabrales Boatyard. We moved slowly on the way through the small, dredged canal. Slow is Pro. The venture turned out to be problem-free. Since the haul of Milagros was postponed a day at short notice, we stopped at the dock of the “Safe Marina” next to the travel lift to spend the night.

Milagros learns to fly

The time had come early the next morning. Milagros learned to fly. For the first time in many years, she was hauled out for an extended period of time. The Astillero Cabrales crew did a very professional job, and Milagros was fixed ashore safely. She was temporarily placed in the midst of many other boats that had also ended up on the dry. Milagros was high pressure cleaned below the waterline. Barnacles and other animals had made the journey on Milagros’ hull with us. These had to go. I used the few hours of waiting until we could “continue our journey” to our allocated spot in the boatyard to make a call to Switzerland. I didn’t want to withhold the impressive sight of Milagros on the hard from my parents.

Thank you thank you thank you

We had finally made it to Puerto Peñasco. A great trip had come to an end for the time being, but I was glad that we had finally arrived. The whole past week we had pushed forward due to the wind situation and I was pretty exhausted. Charging forward for miles in a fixed time frame is not what we’re up to on this adventure. We want to take our time, enjoy and go with the flow. Of course, I also have to thank Iñaki and Carmen again. For all their input, their help and simply for being there on an unforgettable first sailing trip with Milagros. One love.

Our new home

After a few hours of intermediate storage next to the travel lift, we were moved to our definitive location in the boatyard. Now we set out to prepare Milagros to be alone for a few weeks. Because soon it was time to say goodbye again. From Iñaki and Carmen, Puerto Peñasco and also from Milagros.

La Paz is really a beautiful city and we could have easily extended our visit there. But our planning didn’t allow for a longer stay than necessary. As our time window was getting narrower, we had to advance further north: Puerto Peñasco was waiting for us. We made use of a few days without northerly winds to move forward to the next stop Santa Rosalia.

Calm phases alternated with northerlies that lasted for days. Now the engine would have to be used more and more. We had already prepared ourselves mentally for the fact that the sails would be set less and less. The north wind in the Gulf builds up in the far north of the Baja and blows the 600 nautical miles south to La Paz and beyond almost unobstructed. This means that waves have a looot of time to build up and migrate towards the Pacific with the wind.

Baja Bash to Santa Rosalia?

If you head north during a north wind, you have both wind and waves against you. You’re experiencing the notorious “Baja Bash“, but right inside the Gulf instead of on the Pacific coast. The name says it all. As we didn’t feel like going on a hell ride, we observed the forecasts daily and defined the first day of a calm phase as the day of departure. Now the planning phase started again.

Carmen and I are late

Carmen and I had initially planned an anchor stop south of Santa Rosalia. We were too unimpressed by the scant information we had obtained about the city. But not Iñaki. He encouraged us to take a closer look at the city and its harbour basin. It turned out that his idea was the better choice. Of course, Carmen and I had started the passage planning too late, but it was also because of Iñaki’s experience. He knew when the right time was to deal with the onward journey, where and how to look for suitable places to go. Not just the evening before, but 1-2 days earlier. Shame on us!

The wild ride begins

We headed out early the next morning and left La Paz, which had grown dear to us within a very short time, behind us. We refueled Milagros, our calculation of around 130 liters of tank capacity per tank worked out again. And off we went along the Isla Espiritu Santo. Here we were even able to take advantage of a light north-easterly wind and set our sails on a close-hauled course. The joy was short-lived, however.

We are a motorboat now

When we made a course change between Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla San Jose, the angle of the wind became so unfavourable that we had to furl our headsail and start the engine. The wind continued to decrease and so we chugged forward towards Santa Rosalia. Everything was planned to turn out that way, but we still didn’t like the fact.

What now?

Traveling with an engine has its advantages and disadvantages. On one hand there is the constant engine noise, on the other hand you can simply let your boat move along using the autopilot. You don’t have to constantly consider the points of sail and any changes in the wind. Of course, we wanted to sail, but that’s just the way it is sometimes. Boredom can spread because being on the water for hours or days means you have to keep yourself busy. And when motorsailing you definitely have less to do than when you have your sails set.

The happy sailors Carmen and Iñaki from SY Anila helping out on Milagros

Me and my night shifts

I especially had to keep busy on my night shifts. Not only was there less to do now, it was also pitch black, compared to the nights at the pacific coast. The moon rose later and later and so there was nothing more to see. 5 hours could feel like 5 days – time stood still. After all, I always had a sink full of dishes from day to wash up. Apart from doing the dishes, there was a lot of thought and reflection, Nintendo Switch and Netflix. I don’t know if I and night watch will be friends after all.

Fireworks on the bow of Milagros

One of my few lights in the dark was bioluminescence. It is triggered in algae, unicellular organisms, jellyfish and the like. Milagros stimulates the animals in the water, to which they react with their luminous organs. They turned our bow waves into sparkling fireworks. Our propeller vortex, which we invisibly drag behind us during the day, turned into a comet’s tail. Such moments remind me of our beginnings on the Cape Verde Islands, where bioluminescence was sometimes absurdly spectacular. Nature just doesn’t fail to blow my mind over and over again. Maybe one day I will know how to use a camera properly, so I can come up with photos of this phenomenon.

We’re chugging to Santa Rosalia

Motorsailing, we moved towards Santa Rosalia. The hours and days passed, and the nearly 350 nautical mile journey had come to an end. We didn’t set sail again even once. The diesel basically evaporated which meant another date with the fuel dock. We calculated that there would be 60 litres left in the starboard tank. In fact, we topped up with 70 litres and so our theory of almost 130 litres of diesel capacity per tank with a consumption of 3 – 3.5 litres per hour was confirmed. During the renovation at the Rocky Point Boatyard in Puerto Peñasco, we will of course get to the bottom of the matter.

To anchor or not to anchor?

In the small port of Santa Rosalia, we had the choice between a marina, or anchoring in the harbour basin, which was surrounded by breakwaters. We chose the former. During our research when planning the passage, we had read about several sailors who complained that the bottom of the harbour basin was littered and that an old, unused underwater cable crossed the anchorage. Our 30-kilogram anchor has grown a little dear to our hearts and a dive in a Mexican harbour basin was not at the top of our bucket list.

Fonatur Marina Santa Rosalia

We made the right decision, because Marina Fonatur Santa Rosalia is small but nice. There are only about 10 berths, that’s very cute. The price is comparatively cheap at 15$ per night, the toilets and showers are clean and well-maintained. There is also a small swimming pool available to guests. None of these things can be taken for granted in Mexico. The WiFi connection was terribly bad, but we were used to that by now.

Perspective is the bigger Milagros

A couple of docks from ours we met Sarah, Brad and their dog Sydney from sailing vessel “Perspective”. They live aboard a Kelly Peterson 46, which is a slightly larger version of Milagros. It turned out that most of the ships in Marina Santa Rosalia knew each other from Puerto Peñasco. Coming from the Rocky Point Boatyard they had gone through exactly what we had before us. Lots and lots of work.

Is Santa Rosalia an insider tip?

Of course, we also had to take a closer look at the city. France began mining copper in Santa Rosalia around 1880. When the mines were no longer generating enough returns in the 1950s, many of the facilities were left to decay. Their remains are visible to this day, and thus lead to a great contrast between city life and industrial ruins. A Korean consortium is now mining copper, cobalt, manganese and zinc in the “Boleo Mine“. In addition to fishing, the mine is likely to provide the main income for most of the slightly more than 12,000 residents of Santa Rosalia.

French architecture

The main attraction of the city is probably the “Iglesia de Santa Bárbara” church. He‘s the architect of the world-famous Eiffel Tower in Paris. Of course, there also was a French bakery in town. We should have gone on a sightseeing tour, but the church only came back to our minds when we were already on our way to Puerto Peñasco. Guess we’ll have to return.

All in all, we can say that Santa Rosalia was definitely worth the visit. The city is pretty and the marina is great. We can really recommend Santa Rosalia to everyone who visits Baja California, apart from the fact that you might have to wait over half an hour for a cup of coffee. However, we think that thanks to Covid, there was also a little luck involved. The fact that the marina is so small could be more of a curse than a blessing during high season.

It was now time for the last leg to Puerto Peñasco. We had to wait for a weather window with calm winds again, then we could leave. I was excited, because the city in the far north of the Sea of Cortez will be our new home for the big Milagros refit. Fingers crossed.
